CPT Marking Scheme

CPT follows an MCQ based question paper. For each right answer, you will be awarded 1 mark. For every wrong answer, there will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks. Students need to score at least 30% in individual papers and 50% in aggregate to clear the CPT exam. Here are a few quick tips you need to keep in mind to correctly answer questions in CPT:

•  It’s not the question that makes it hard, it’s the options that make it hard

•  Use the elimination method to answer questions in CPT

•  Rely on common sense and pre-existing knowledge

•  If you don’t know the answer, make an educated guess

•  If you can at least eliminate one option, go for that question

•  If you have ‘none of the above’ as an option, watch out! In most cases, this option won’t be the correct answer.

•  If you have ‘all of the above’ as an option, consider it seriously. This option usually has a higher chance of being the correct answer

•  Don’t be afraid of negative marking

•  Look out for words like ‘NOT’, ‘CORRECT’, ‘INCORRECT’ in the question. If you encounter a question with any of these words in it. Make sure you read the question a couple of times before answering it.

•  Between Accounts and Law, allocate more time for Accounts while writing the exam

•  Between Economics and Q.A., finish answering Economics first before going on to QA

Now that you know everything you need to know about CPT exams, let’s take a look at the preparation tips and tricks for CPT that will help you to clear the exam in a single attempt.

10 Quick Tips to Clear CA-CPT in single attempt

 1. Prepare short term and long term goals and targets, and work hard to achieve them. If you are planning to finish one subject in ‘x’ number of days: it is your long-term goal. When you allocate hours to specific chapters within the subject, it becomes your short-term goal.

 2. A positive attitude is half the battle won. Develop confidence in yourself. In this context, it is important to remember that failure is not fatal. It is not the end of the world if you have failed to crack CPT once or twice or even thrice, just get up and do it the fourth time! Make sure you clear the exams this time.

3. Understand the syllabus well and figure out your strengths and weakness.

 4. Make a study planner and stick to it. Prepare a timetable by understanding your aptitude and the time available at hand. If you are not from a commerce background, you may find it difficult to cope up with accounts so allocate your time likewise. But let’s say, you are pro in accounts but QA is your weak point, then you should focus more on QA.

 5. Develop a conceptual understanding of fundamental accounting and solve practical problems.

 6. Understand the legal provisions and rules of Indian Contract Act, Sales of Goods Act and Partnership accounts thoroughly. Try to prepare notes, it will help you revising again and again.

 7. Economics requires both conceptual understanding and practice as it has graphs and diagrams. Also be well versed with the latest statistics applicable to your attempt.

 8. For Quantitative Aptitude, understand the formula and elementary concepts of mathematics and its applications. Normally student from commerce stream finds this subject difficult. If you find any chapter difficult, don’t skip altogether. At least cover basics and simple numerical from it.

 9. Follow your plan. For success, it is important to follow strictly what you have planned.

 10. Practice, practice, and practice using a number of resources available including mock test papers, model test papers, sample papers and PYPs.
