How to Start Preparing for the CA IPCC Nov-17 Exam (Important Topics)

You’ve cleared the first stage of CA, and you now enter the second stage — CA-IPCC. However, you may be pondering on what to study for the exam. Such thinking about what to study can prevent you from actually studying. So, we at CAprep18 have gathered a few pointers from the lecturers at J.K. Shah Classes to help get you started with study preparations for this intermediate yet crucial stage in Chartered Accountancy – the Integrated Professional Competence Course.

For the IPCC papers which include more than one subject, we’ve divided the paper into a study section to help you prepare better.

What to study in Paper 1 Accounting?
When studying for Accounting, you would need to go through the following fifteen chapters on Accounting Standards, Company Final Accounts, Cash Flow Statement, Internal Reconstruction & PPI, Amalgamation, Absorption & Reconstruction, Average Due Date, Account Current, Self-Balancing Ledger, Non-Profit Organisation, Single Entry, Hire Purchase & Installment Sale Transaction, Accounting for Investments, Insurance Claims for Loss of Stock & Loss of Profit, Partnership Account, and the theory part of Accounting in Computerised Environment. The Accounting paper is of 100 marks.

What to study in Section A - Business Law of Paper 2?
When studying for Business Law, you would need to go through the following five chapters based on important Acts such as the Indian Contract Act, 1872; Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881; Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; Employee Provident Fund Act, 1952; and Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. Read only the practical questions from the ICAI study module.

What to study in Section B - Company Law of Paper 2?
When studying for Company Law, you would need to go through the following fifteen chapters on Company Basic Concepts, MOA & AOA, Preliminary & Provisional Contracts, Promoters & Company Law Administration, Prospectus, Allotment of Shares, Membership, Contracts etc…, Share Capital, Share Certificate & Share Warrants, Transfer & Transmission of Shares, Forfeiture of Shares, Bonus Shares & Debentures, Registration of a Charge, Meetings, and Company Law in a Computerised Environment.

What to study in Section C - Ethics of Paper 2?
When studying for Ethics, you would need to go through the following six chapters on Principles of Business Ethics, Corporate Governance & Corporate Social Responsibility, Ethics in Workplace, Environment Issues, Ethics in Marketing & Consumer Protection, and Ethics in Accounting & Finance.

What to study in Section D - Communication of Paper 2?
When studying for Communication, you would need to go through the following seven chapters on Essentials of Communication, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Group Dynamics, Communication Ethics, Communicating Corporate Culture, Communication in Business Environment, and Legal Deeds & Documents. Section D of Paper 2 is of 20 marks.

What to study in Section A - Costing of Paper 3?
When studying for Costing, you would need to go through the following thirteen chapters on Cost Sheet, Material Cost, Labour Cost, Overheads/Absorption, Integral & Non-Integral Accounts, Reconciliation, Contract Costing, Operating Costing, Process Costing, Joint Products & By-Products, Standard Costing, Marginal Costing, and Budgetary Control. Section A of Paper 3 is of 50 marks.

What to study in Section B - Financial Management of Paper 3?
When studying for Financial Management, you would need to go through the following twelve chapters on Financial Analysis & Planning, Ratio Analysis, Cash Flow Statement, Funds Flow Statement, Cost of Capital & Capital Structure, Leverage, Capital Budgeting, Working Capital Management, Cash Budget, Management of Inventory, Receivable Management, and the theory part of Types of Financing. Section B of Paper 3 is of 50 marks.

What to study in Paper 4 Taxation?
When studying for Taxation, you would need to go through the following sixteen chapters on Definition, Basic Concepts, Incomes which do not Form Part of Total Income, Income from Salaries, Income from House Property, Profit & Gains from Business & Profession, Capital Gains, Income from Other Sources, Clubbing Provisions, Set Off & Carry Forward of Losses, Deduction, Computation of Total Income, Advance Tax & TDS, Assessment Procedures, Value Added Tax (VAT), and Service Tax.

The syllabus of the Taxation paper was revamped in November 2014. Here is a detailed break-up of the number of questions which have come from each chapter ever since.

What to study in Paper 5 Advanced Accounting?
When studying for Advanced Accounting, you would need to go through the following thirteen chapters on Accounting Standards, Company Accounts, Underwriter's Liability, Amalgamation & Reconstruction, Redemption of Debentures, Liquidation, Banking Companies, Insurance Companies, Electricity Companies, Department Accounts, Branch Accounts & Foreign Branches, Dissolution of Partnership Firms, and Amalgamation & Conversion of Partnership Firms. The Advanced Accounting paper is of 100 marks.

What to study in Paper 6 Auditing?
When studying for Auditing, you would need to go through the following eight chapters on Introduction to Auditing, Basic Concept in Auditing, Preparation for an Audit, Internal Controls, Vouching & Verification, Company Audit, Specialised Audit, and AAS, AS & Guidance Notes. The Auditing paper is of 100 marks.

What to study in Section A Information Technology of Paper 7?
When studying for Information Technology, you would need to go through the following five chapters on Business Process Management, Information System & its Fundamentals, Telecommunication Network, Business Information System, and Business Process Automation. Section A of Paper 7 is of 50 marks.
